A Bit Of Downtime

Thursday, 11th September 2014

It’s been a busy year for me, and without doubt the most successful to date since becoming a full-time video production freelancer. The last 6 months in particular have been none stop workwise, whilst also managing to move home in the midst of all the projects I’ve been working on. And whilst I’d hope to continue this fine run of continuous work there does come a time when we all need some downtime.

Fortunately, due to a quiet summer period and not of my own choice, I’ve had a lull in the workload which has enabled me to not only relax, have a break away, and spend some quality time with my family and friends, it’s also provided me with sometime to get things in order back in the office. Things like website updates, writing blogs, archiving completed projects and updating software just don’t get my attention when I’m busy filming and editing. Also sourcing further work is something I cannot do whilst on the road filming or sat in my studio with a deadline to meet to complete an edit.

I’ve come to realise that there’s an element of being reactive rather than proactive whilst being self-employed. I can’t factor into my schedule when the phone will ring and when I will take bookings. I don’t want to turn the right kind of work down because you never know if you’ll get that call again or when the next project will come my way.  However, being proactive in sourcing work, updating my online presence to assist my marketing strategies, and keeping on top of my working systems in the office will have a positive effect on the future development of my career. It’s just a case of finding the right balance I suppose. And of course, not forgetting to factor in time for the next holiday.
